HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) plans involve getting small businesses and the self-employed to complete digital tax records and returns, with the eventual aim of going completely paperless. MTD wants to make it easier for businesses to get their tax right and avoid the errors.

MTD for VAT

The first phase of MTD was in 2019 for VAT, this involved keeping digital records and using accounting software to complete VAT tax returns. Currently it is affecting VAT-registered businesses with a taxable turnover above the VAT threshold of £85,000, next all VAT-registered businesses will need to comply with Making Tax Digital and this would need it from April 2022.

MTD for Self- Assessment

From April 2023, Self-Assessment taxpayers as well need to comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax.

MTD for Landlords

Once MTD for Landlord goes live, you’ll be expected to file 4 quarterly income tax updates and a final declaration every year, they are required to keep the digital records of all their business income and expenses.
